2025

KC Brick Lab participated in 23 different club displays, local conventions, and regional LEGO conventions in 2025.  During our monthly meetings we averaged 35 members with an average of 6 Foundation Challenge submissions each month.

Public Participation and Presentations

Over the year, the club provided seven hands-on experiences with the public. This included our Build the Death Star Trench (two times), our mosaic building activity (four times), and we also designed and had the public build a Spider-Man / Peter Parker mosaic at Elite Comics Summer Jam.  At Planet Comicon, members gave a presentation on How To design and build LEGO mosaics. At Planet Anime the club built a photo opportunity of a One Piece Wanted Poster that guests could get their picture taken in.

Event Highlights (not all 2025 events listed)

4-5 January – Great Train Show (KCI Expo Center)

15 members provided builds and constructed a 20×15 foot LEGO city full of original creations, two running trains, and a new operating street car.  The city includes over ten buildings and vehicles that are inspired by Kansas City landmarks (KC Street Car, 909 Walnut, RideKC buses, etc.)

15-16 February – KC Brick Lab Showcase (Indian Creek Library)

42 members from the club built, displayed, set up, and volunteered over the weekend at our annual FREE showcase at the library.  We displayed our LEGO city, an operational Great Ball Contraption, individual builds of vehicles, characters, life-size items, mosaics, botanical and more, and we had our hands-on mosaic building activity for the public to play with.  New Kansas City landmarks included HyVee, the Kansas City Public Library, Happy Gillis, the Vietnam Cafe, and Carvana.

Public Attendance for the event was 2,137.

20-23 March – Planet Comicon Kansas City (Bartle Hall, KCMO)

23 members from the club built, displayed, set up, and volunteered at Kansas City’s biggest pop culture comic book convention over the weekend.  Builds included mosaics, pop culture vehicles, and jumbo minifig habitats of characters portrayed by guests at the convention.

We even got autographs on mosaics of David Tennant (Doctor Who and Scrooge McDuck), Christina Ricci (Sleepy Hollow), and Tom Rugger (Animanics and Pinky and the Brain) among others.  Members of the club also conducted a presentation to attendees on different methods to build mosaics and built one on the stage during the presentation.

5-6 April – Brick Days (Council Bluffs, Iowa)

25 members attended Brick Days Omaha LEGO Fan convention and displayed our club’s LEGO city, and individual builds.  We also conducted our Star Wars Build the Death Star Trench Run activity for the public and displayed over xx Disney Jumbo Minifig Habitats for the public to see if they could get all the Disney movies and shows correct. Members received a total of 10 individual award nominations at the convention and the winners were:

11-12 April – LPL Con (Lawrence Public Library Convention in Lawrence, KS)

18 members displayed at LPL Con in Lawrence, highlighting pop culture builds, Disney Minifigure Habitats, and local Lawrence buildings and churches in LEGO minifigure scale.

Public Attendance for this FREE event was 2, 669. 

26-27 April – Brick Slopes Colorado (Denver, Colorado)

3 members attended the first ever Brick Slopes Denver in April with builds from 5 members of the club.  3 members were awarded “Best Attention to Detail” for their Disneyland Main Street U.S.A. collaboration build of a block of Main Street from the disney theme park.  Congrats to Joe H., Craig L., and Suzi M.

2 May – May the Force Be With You at the Independence Uptown Farmers Market (Independence, MO)

8 members displayed and volunteered at the annual Independence, MO Star Wars event with themed creations.  We also let the public get hands-on and build sections of our Death Star Trench during the event.

14-15 June – Brickworld Chicago (Schaumburg, IL)

14 members of KC Brick Lab came and displayed builds and participated in multiple challenges and activities.  We also brought our Disney Jumbo Minifig Habitats for the public to enjoy.  3 members were nominated for awards at the convention.

28-29 June – Brick Convention Wichita (Wichita, KS)

8 members displayed at Brick Convention in Wichita, KS this weekend and got to meet up with our friends in ICT LUG in Wichita.  The following members won awards at the convention:

1-31 July – LEGO Timelines Displays at N Independence Library and W. Wyandotte Library

The club highlighted specific LEGO themes with displays of original sets from throughout time for LEGO Space, LEGO Trains, and LEGO castle at two different libraries in July.

2-3 August – Brick Convention St Louis (St Louis, MO)

3 members displayed at Brick Convention over the weekend and got to hang out with members of Gateway LUG and other LEGO Fan clubs.

The following members won awards at the convention:  

Todd and Ashleigh K. won Best Landscape for their animal habitat

David F. won Best Train for his train and city MOC

16 August – Elite Comics Summer Jam (Overland Park, KS)

8 members displayed and volunteered at this one day comic book event.  The club designed a Spider-Man / Peter Parker mosaic that we let the public build throughout the day for a fun build activity.

15-17 August – Brick Falls LEGO Convention (Sioux Falls, SD)

5 members travelled to Sioux Falls to display at the local convention with some of our friends from other midwest LEGO clubs.

14-16 November – Meeple-A-Thon (Overland Park, KS)

12 members displayed and volunteered at this gaming convention at the Overland Park Convention Center.  We also set up our mosaic building activity for the public to participate in and build 8-bit versions of video game and comic book characters.

21-23 November – Planet Anime Kansas City (Bartle Hall, KCMO)

12 members of the club displayed and volunteered at this annual anime convention.  Inspired by the guests that are voice actors from the anime hit, One Piece, the club built a One Piece Wanted Poster out of LEGO bricks as a photo opp for attendees that was a hit with the public.

21 November – 31 December – Union Station Holiday Reflections (KCMO)

20 members of the club built a winter-themed amusement park (Santa’s Brickyard) that was illuminated with holiday themed lights. This display was part of the Holiday Reflections event at Union Station.
